Snoring Problems

by Incredible Articles - Last Modified: 11/13/2007

ould CPAP Help Your Snoring Problem?

aybe you aren't aware of it, but your family probably is. You have a snoring problem! You're not alone since it's estimated that almost half of all adults snore at least occasionally. With some persons, particularly those who are overweight, snoring can become a more serious problem. How? Snoring has been associated with the presence of sleep apnea which, if untreated, can cause heart and lung problems in the long term. One potential treatment that can reduce the incidence of long term problems due to sleep apnea is the use of CPAP.

CPAP is a system composed of a facial mask that provides pressurized air to keep your airway open when you sleep. CPAP is not a CURE for sleep apnea or for problems with snoring but it does relieve the symptoms. The drawback to using CPAP is that you have to use it every night in order for it to be effective. Some people find having a mask over their face to be claustrophobic. Plus, it may be difficult to use CPAP when you travel and sleep out of your home. The good news is CPAP is almost 100% effective in relieving the symptoms of snoring and sleep apnea. You can't get much better than that!

How do you know if you would benefit from a CPAP device? The need for CPAP will be determined by your doctor after reviewing your history and carefully examining you. He may send you to a local sleep center to have a sleep study performed. At this time, CPAP therapy may be started at different pressures to see which pressure level will be most beneficial.

What happens if you're unable to tolerate the CPAP mask? It may take some time, but most people are able to adjust to CPAP. It may be best to start by wearing the mask for only a portion of the night and gradually increase the time in which you use the mask. If the mask feels uncomfortable on your face, you may benefit from being fitted with a CPAP mask of a different size.

CPAP may be just the answer you need for dealing with habitual snoring and sleep apnea. With a properly fitting mask and a bit of lifestyle adjustment, you can enjoy a good night's sleep again with the help of this positive pressure system. Check with your doctor and see if you're a candidate for CPAP!
