Whether You Call It Sleep Disorder, Sleep Disturbance or Insomnia, It Still

by Incredible Articles - Last Modified: 11/13/2007

ver lay in bed trying to go to sleep and random thoughts, perhaps even worries, race around your brain prohibiting you from sleep? No matter what you do, you just can't seem to fall asleep. This is referred to as transient insomnia. On occasion, everyone experiences a restless night, but a real Sleep Disorder is a whole different ballgame.

Sleep Disorder is characterized by the inability to get the amount of sleep needed to function efficiently. On a short-term or temporary basis, drugs such as Ambien or Lunesta can be prescribed to alleviate the pattern.

There are many more serious forms of Sleep Disorder, and finding the root cause is the most important element in ascertaining the cure. Some of the more chronic and serious forms of Insomnia are: Sleep Terror Disorder, whereby the person fights sleep
for fear of never waking up. Sleep Apnea Syndrome, which is created by a blockage of the upper airway during sleep. Parasomnia, which is a form of Nightmare Disorder.

Sleep disorders pertaining to mental problems come in the form of depression or anxiety. Sleep disorders pertaining to medical are usually the result of a neurological dysfunction. Sleep disorders, substance induced pertain to the abuse of alcohol and drugs. Treating a long-term sleep problem without ever find the cause is like putting a band aide on a wound...a temporary fix but not a solution nor a cure.

Polysomnography is a form of testing to ascertain the base cause of Insomnia. This is a test that is often referred to as a sleep study and is ordered by your doctor.

If your sleepless nights are an ongoing problem, you should seek the assistance of a competent medical health care provider and do the testing to determine the cause so the problem can, once and for all, be cured!!
