3 Things to Consider Before Becoming a Work at Home Mom

by Incredible Articles - Last Modified: 10/23/2007

any women tell me that they would love to do what I do, to become a work at home mom. I'm here to tell you that it's not all rainbows and sunshine. Yes, it is rewarding and you have that extra time to spend with your children, but there are some downsides, too. It is very important that you really think it through before you take the plunge and decide to work at home.

I've compiled a list of the 5 things that I consider to be most important in making this huge decision. Make sure you are prepared to take on the good and the bad, before becoming a work at home mom.

Finances. Obviously you are going to be looking at your finances before deciding to work at home, but if your salary is a major part of the family budget, you will need to try and cut back on expenses and save some money up first. It can be difficult, but plan to have at least 3-6 months worth of salary saved up before making the switch, more if you will be starting your own business, since it can take a while to start earning.

Time. When are you going to work? If you have small children who stay at home all day, don't expect to get a full day's labor in unless you have help. With older kids, you can work while they are in school and at night. Many work at home moms find that it is necessary to hire part time help in the form of a nanny or mother's help. This allows you to still be near your children, but also gives you the ability to continue working without too many distractions.

Business. Are you starting your own business or working for someone else? If you plan to start your own business, make sure everything is in place beforehand. The majority of new businesses take up to a year to bring in a profit, so you will want to know exactly where to go and what to do in order to get your business up and running as fast as possible.
It can take some time to get to the point where you are ready to work at home, whether you plan to start your own business or work for someone else. Taking the time to really plan things out will save you a lot of problems and financial issues later on, so make sure you lay everything out before leaving your job.
